Mary and Main, we are thrilled to see the rise of medical marijuana in replacement of opioids. We fully believe in the healing properties cannabis holds in treating a wide variety of ailments. Having medical marijuana as a treatment option provides those suffering from ailments a variety of treatments. A recent question we have been pondering is, do patients prefer medical marijuana over pharmaceuticals?

Medical Marijuana VS Pharmaceuticals

A study conducted by the University of Michigan found that most patients preferred to replace their pharmaceuticals with medical marijuana, with 44% of patients completely ending their prescription use. The researchers also found that “medical cannabis users reported a greater degree of use of medical cannabis and a greater degree of trust in medical cannabis compared to mainstream healthcare. In comparison to pharmaceutical drugs, medical cannabis users rated cannabis better on effectiveness, side effects, safety, addictiveness, availability, and cost”.

This study allows us to advance our knowledge in more of an evidence-based approach regarding using marijuana as a treatment plan.

Maryland Medical Marijuana

There is an increasing amount of evidence that proves medical marijuana is used just as effectively as opioids when treating chronic pain. The efficacy of using medical marijuana to manage pain is due to the endocannabinoid properties found in the plant, which is thought to play a key role in how the body regulates and manages pain. As research continues, the current findings are good indicators that medical marijuana holds the potential to continue lowering opioid usage in North America.
