6 Ways to Consume Cannabis

When it comes to cannabis consumption, there are a number of methods used such as inhalation, oral, or topical. Under these three methods are an umbrella of techniques to consume the THC. Each method provides a unique experience and different effects, making it a fun way to explore the best option for your body! Stay tuned to learn the six ways you can consume cannabis.

Smoked Cannabis

Smoking medical marijuana through a glass piece, pipe, or joint may be the most popular method. When inhaled, the THC and CBD are absorbed by the lungs, into the blood, and through the blood-brain barrier. One will typically feel the first effects within a few minutes, and will gradually wear off after 2-3 hours. Smoking is often used to treat acute symptoms that need to be addressed quickly, such as nausea, muscle spasms, or vomiting.

Cannabis Tea

Cannabis prepared as a tea will include significant amounts of THC and CBD in their non-psychoactive form. Although there is little research on this method, the cannabinoid acids have been found to provide significant therapeutic properties.

Sublingual Sprays

Sublingual sprays are made from cannabis extracts that may be mixed with another substance, like coconut oil. The cannabis concentrate is sprayed under the tongue which is quickly absorbed. The first effects are generally felt within 10-15 minutes and is an ideal option for consistent dosing.

Edibles

Edibles are foods or snacks cooked with cannabis-infused oil, butter or ghee. A point to note regarding edibles are the time is takes for the effects to kick-in, ranging from 30 minutes to an hour. Once the cannabinoids have entered your system, they will last 4 to 6 hours – considerably longer than inhaled cannabis.

Vaporizing

Vaporizing with a vape pen or another device offers the same immediate benefits of smoking. Since a vaporizer heats the cannabis flower or oil without burning it, the active ingredients are inhaled as a vapor and no smoke is involved. Some prefer vaporizing medical marijuana opposed to smoking due to the smooth inhale, making it less harsh on the lungs.

Topical and Salves

For those who prefer an alternative to inhaling to eating cannabis, we suggest considering a topical or salve option. Cannabis extracts can be infused in a balm, lotion, or ointment and applied directly to the skin. Patients report that cannabis topicals are effective for pain, inflammation, infections, and skin conditions. This allows you to treat the exact spot without feeling the psychoactive properties in cannabis.
